Review: Lee Daniels Butler (2013) *** 1/2 (out of four) looks at fifty years of American history through the eyes of Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), a black person and as a boy saw his father killed, but managed to break free cotton field and serves as a butler at the White House for eight different presidents. Directed by Lee Daniels is a pretty important topic and manages to make it fun for most people. I say this because it seems to be that the film is being attacked for the mainstream, but I thought the director did a very good job in telling this story in a way that many enjoy. It certainly does not hurt to have obtained Whitaker turns in one of the best performances of his career as a butler we see grow and change throughout American history. The film feels very much like Forest Gump as we go through the early days where blacks are still working on the cotton fields to the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and of course events that Nixon got to in the director thought I actually managed to tell the aspects of history and keep it very entertaining throughout. Some people are calling the film racist, but really? Cmon now. Performances are definitely the highlight of the film with Whitaker doing a great job. I really liked the script when it changed during his life as a real person, and I think Whitaker perfectly conveys all this. The way you manage Whitaker at these events, as well as caring for their own personal story where the heart of the image. Supporting cast includes strong performances by Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, Terrance Howard, as well as a wide range of cameos from Clarence Williams III, Robin Williams, Vanessa Redgrave, John Cusack, Olivia Washington, Liev Schreiber, Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda among others. I will say that I was very strange that none of the actors are really into sound or look like the presidents who have played. LEE DANIELS Butler certainly is told with love from your directors, and even 132 minutes never feel long. |
